of

X voor alle gebruiker gelijk

zou moeten zijn.

Mmmm, klinkt als een FileMaker Pro 7-wens ... :D

Sources: FileMaker to release Version 7 in March

By Nick dePlume, Publisher and Editor in Chief

February 23, 2004 - FileMaker Inc. will announce and ship its major database upgrade in March, sources told Think Secret.

Multiple sources allege that the company will ship FileMaker 7 by the end of next month, and will release the database's server version later in the year.

The company will likely announce the new version on March 9 or 10, and has been ramping up for the release with worldwide launch events. In the UK, for example, technology journalists have been invited to a March 10 "major launch event" at a private London club. FileMaker's PR representatives there called the introduction "one of the most significant announcements made by FileMaker in the last 10 years." FileMaker executives and other personnel will be on hand at that event, sources said.

The server version will ship a few months later, sources said. One informant told Think Secret that the Pro and Developer versions of FileMaker 7 will ship in March while the Server, Advanced Server, and Mobile flavors will ship later in the year.

Earlier, some sources anticipated that FileMaker would announce the new version at Macworld Expo/San Francisco, but the company instead opted to push back the announcement, which has given the company more time to demo Version 7. "This upgrade is bigger than any other upgrade in the past," said one source who recently got his first look at FileMaker 7. "This release is going to keep FileMaker a best-in-class app for several years."

Think Secret first broke the story on FileMaker 7 in August 2003, and this month published an exclusive special report on the upgrade's new features. FileMaker 7 will incorporate massive changes, and many sources who are familiar with the product have called it the most significant FileMaker upgrade to date.

Last-minute FileMaker 7 details

By Nick dePlume, Publisher and Editor in Chief

March 8, 2004 - With FileMaker Inc. planning to announce and ship its major database upgrade this week, sources provided some last-minute details about Version 7. Earlier, we published a special report on the new features in FileMaker Pro 7, and we now have the opportunity to discuss a number of previously unreported items.

Announcement and Product Mix

Last month, we reported that the company would announce and ship FileMaker 7 before the end of March, and would release the database's server version later in the year. At the time, we mentioned Tuesday, March 9 as one of the likely announcement dates.

Sources confirm that the announcement is still on for Tuesday, and say that the new version will ship that very same day with a $299 price tag. The server version of FileMaker 7 will reportedly come a few months later, around June, though one source says that the company is planning a public beta in advance of the actual release.

A source also tells Think Secret that FileMaker will offer a special, low-cost upgrade to customers of FileMaker Pro 6 who bought the product after February 9. In addition, the informant points to a mail-in rebate for users of past versions of FileMaker Developer.

FileMaker Server 7 and Advanced

FileMaker currently offers an "Unlimited" version for Internet database publishing, but sources say that Version 7 will comprise two server products: the $999 FileMaker Server 7, and a $2499 "Advanced" version. FileMaker Server 7 Advanced will provide web hosting functionality, sources said, but will come packed with more capabilities than the company's current offerings; the standard server version will provide workgroup hosting.

"You no longer need two products to serve to a Web site," one informant said of the new product mix.FileMaker Server 7 will handle many of the tasks that were previously processed by the client, as it features its own database engine, yielding reduced network traffic and noticeable speed improvements that will be magnified by faster hardware.

FileMaker Server 7 will support 250 simultaneous users, 125 hosted files, server-side processing, live backup capability, and solution partitioning. FileMaker Server 7 Advanced will support 250 simultaneous users and 100 simultaneous, multi-threaded web transactions, 125 hosted files, SSL encryption, custom XML/XSLT web publishing, server-side processing, live backup, solution partitioning, and 70 script steps on the web, as well as FMPRO, ODBC, JDBC, IWP, and CWB. Users will be able to run it on single, two or three-machine configurations; the software will require Apache on Mac OS X Server or IIS on Windows Server 2000/2003 to act as the web server, and will not support Apache on Windows or Linux.

The server products will also feature multiple-processor and multiple-NIC support, and will use up to 70% of available RAM.

FileMaker Mobile 7

Sources said FileMaker Mobile 7 will be a standalone application and will feature runtime support, script execution before and after synchronization, and the ability the synchronize multiple devices. It's not known when the Mobile version will ship.

FileMaker Developer 7

The Developer version of FileMaker 7, which is expected to ship in March for $599, will feature custom functions, comments for relationships and fields, protection of proprietary scripts and calculations, and the ability to re-use scripts and calculations from table to table.

Script steps

The new script steps in FileMaker 7 will include: New Window, Select Window, Close Window, Adjust Window, Move/Resize Window, Arrange All Windows, Set Window Title, Open Record/Request, Commit Record/Request, Revert Record/Request, Update Link, Export Field Contents, Insert from last visited, Else If, Set Selection, and Perform Find/Replace.

Limits

The limits in FileMaker Pro 7 will be: 2MB of text per field, 2GB for a container field, 1 million tables per file, 64 quadrillion records per table, and a maximum 8TB file size.

Features, Security, and Performance

While many of FileMaker 7's features have been covered in our special report, sources noted that the upgrade will also feature text styling through scripts and calculations, encryption of data between server and client, Active Directory account management, circular reference calculations, and the ability to import by name or URL from a field.

Het lijkt al met al niet lang meer te gaan duren........
