Corrigeer me als ik me vergis, maar men vertelt me dat die "helaas" in uw geval niet nodig is. De Mac zou redelijk immuun zijn tegen alle problemen waarvoor die patches en service packs bedoeld zijn. Hier zijn bijv. nooit problemen geweest op de Macs , wel - en heel wat - op de Windows machines .

REPORT RANKS SECURITY OF OPERATING SYSTEMS

A new report from mi2g Ltd. ranks Apple Computer's Macintosh as among the most secure operating systems, much less vulnerable to hackers, worms, and viruses than either Microsoft or Linux operating systems. The report is based on data from mi2g's Security Intelligence Products and Systems database, which tracks information about computer vulnerabilities. Of the 1,162 vulnerabilities discovered in the first 10 months of this year, more than 500 affected Windows, and more than 200 affected Linux. Fewer than 25 vulnerabilties were reported for Macintosh and for each of two versions of UNIX. The report also noted that the number of attacks on computers has risen sharply this year, with worldwide economic losses from those attacks reaching $7.8 billion.

*Redelijk* immuun is zoals "waarschijnlijk ga ik toch nooit een ongeluk hebben, zelfs als ik geen autogordel draag".

Deze stelling vereist minstens twee nuances:

 

- Het gaat over Mac OS 9. Zo gauw je praat over Mac OS X kom je in de Unix wereld terecht, en heb je op je "Mac" dus ook alle gevaren inherent aan BSD.

 

- Het feit dat er niet zoveel hacks en virussen voor de Mac zijn, is voor een deel ook omdat de Mac gewoonweg niet zo wijdverspreid is. Ik denk niet dat dat echt iets is om over op je borst te kloppen.

Spijtig, dus. Welk is het meest aan te raden anti-virus pakket voor de Mac? Ik heb wel iets tegen abonnementsystemen waarbij je elk jaar langs de kassa moet...

 

PS In mijn iets jongere tijd was BSD "Belgische strijdkrachten Duitsland". Wat betekent dat vandaag?

Er zijn er niet veel, behalve van de klassieke fabrikanten (MacAfee, Norton et al.), en alleen maar voor de desktop. Oplossingen voor av op netwerk, servers, email, centraal beheer enz zijn bijna onbestaand. Als je bv je email wil scannen (de belangrijkste av component in elke organisatie) ben je aangewezen op niet-Mac OS applicaties. Het is dat, of onbeschermd zijn.

 

Met MacOS X verandert dit natuurlijk, maar dat is dan ook niet meer "echt" Mac OS.

 

Ik heb wel iets tegen abonnementsystemen waarbij je elk jaar langs de kassa moet...

Bij av producten is dat bijna onvermijdelijk, omdat de technologie zo snel verandert. Bv 80% van de av licenties die wij verkopen zijn jaarlijks of tweejaarlijks, hoewel dat theoretisch een pak duurder is dan een echte aankoop van de software. Maar wat ben je met aangekochte software als die na twee jaar hopeloos verouderd is?
